Aberduna Reserve, North Wales Wildlife Trust | View Attraction Details
description
Aberduna is a species-rich limestone grassland and woodland reserve overlooking the Clwydian Range. It became a reserve in 1992 as part of the quarrying agreement between Pioneer and the Local Authority and is now a haven for a wide range of butterflies, some rare plants, magnificent birds and it even has some sea life........... by way of fossils. The limestone, which is the foundation for a great diversity of wildlife, was formed when Wales and the rest of the UK was underwater south of the equator. Shellfish, sea-lilies, corals and algal plants fell to the sea bed once they died and overtime formed the limestone foundations for this reserve. These foundations have been folded and lifted over millions of years; smoothed by ice and dissolved by rain in more recent times to form the limestone pavement. This, together with ancient woodland with a lush under storey and old trees, provides the basis for a wonderfully diverse array of wildlife. Here you'll enjoy a wild walk, filled with human and evolutionary history and some spectacular views of the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
